Nestled away a stones throw from the picturesque village of Gourge, is our little home, we fondly refer to as 'Chateau Noir'. Tucked away between the Loire Valley  and the Dordogne

A traditional  French farmhouse, renovated with a modern touch, boasts 3 available bedrooms, sleeping in total 8 people. The main bedroom consists of a double bed and  a day bed that sleeps 2. This is accompanied by a further smaller bedroom with a double bed and an upstairs bedroom with 2 single beds.

The house has two bathrooms and a cosy living room with a irresistible wood burning stove, for those chilly  evenings.  A modern family kitchen, inclusive of oven, washing machine and dishwasher, gives the home a modern feel.

A large patio and garden is a must for the long summer days and evenings relaxing in the French country sunshine.

Gourgé is situated in the Deux-Sèvres department, Poitou-Charentes region and is one of many villages that delight with their fairy-tale chateaus, medieval architecture and captivating scenery. This area and countryside offers some of the most enchanting and picturesque areas in all of France.

The Poitou-Charentes region is on the western coast of France where it faces the Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Biscay. The coastal region of Poitou-Charentes around Ile-de-Ré has a microclimate that is said to be the second sunniest region of mainland France (after Provence).

There are four departments that make up the Poitou-Charentes region: Charente (to the south), Charente-Maritime (to the west), Deux-Sèvres (to the north) and Vienne (to the east). Charente-Maritime is the only one of these departments that has a coastline.

Poitiers is 34 miles from La Gandonniere / Gourge, while the stunning wine region of Saumur is 32 miles away. La Rochelle / Ile de Re are 81 miles and a little further a field is Bordeaux.

The nearest airport is Poitiers-Biard Airport, 31 miles , with La Rochelle being 84 miles and Tours 82 miles from the accommodation.

A spectacular, beautiful and peaceful drive from Calais is approximately 6 hours with Le Harve only 4.

Additional Information

The Region

Poitou is a historic region in west central France. Poitiers, the former capital of the region, is its chief city. Farming is important to the economy; wheat, corn, and cattle are raised. Industries produce machinery, chemicals, and dairy products.

The region's first known inhabitants, the Pictavi, a Gallic tribe, were conquered in 56 BC by the Romans who incorporated the area into Gaul as part of the province of Aquitania. The Visigoths seized the region in AD 418, but it passed to the FRANKS in 507. In 732 or 733, CHARLES MARTEL ended the Muslim invasion of western Europe by his victory in the Battle of Poitiers. From the 10th to the mid-12th century, the counts of Poitou were also the dukes of AQUITAINE, and the city of Poitiers grew in importance. In 1152, Poitou came under English control through the marriage of ELEANOR OF AQUITAINE to Henry II (later king of England). The region was reunited with the French crown in 1416 and was a province of France until the Revolution (1789-95), when it was divided into three departments, Vienne, Deux-Sevres, and Vendee.

Parthenay Medieval Quarter

See relics of the old Castle of the Lords of Parthenay: ramparts dotted with towers, the bridge and the door of St. James, which form a picturesque scene with the peaceful river; Rue de la Vau Saint-Jacques, where the pilgrims used to stop, and its old half-timbered houses; the Romanesque gate of the Church of Our Lady of La Couldre; the gate to the Citadel, town and the Clock Tower, from the early 13th century.

Chateau Brézé
At first sight, there is nothing about the impressive Château of Brézé to suggest that it sits atop the largest underground fortress in Europe. The Brézé estate, hidden behind its silent stone walls, is now open to the public and offers some of the most unusual visits among the Loire Châteaux.
