It is by a note of Jacques Robin, priest of Gourgé in 1873, seduced by its charm and its history that we go to its discovery.

Delightfully seated on the top of a rocky hill, which crowns a magnificent transitional church, (Romanesque and pre-Romanesque), Gourgé is one of the most remarkable villages because of its picturesque location on some sides as you arrive. Whether at sunrise or sunset, you are seduced by the beauty of the landscape You are pleasantly surprised by the harmonious variety of the painting that charms you.

This majestically unfolds before you, its deep valley watered by the Thouet which flows under its old Romanesque bridge, several times secular

Although a less rugged, noon, however, for the walker a real charm. I love these naked and bare rocks, I like this silent brook in summer, soft in autumn, fresh in spring, impetuous and roaring in winter.

The south is more severe still, it is a broad slope whose extreme summit planted with brooms, is surmounted by a mill. (the broom and the mill being gone now).

The north shows at first less roughness, but, for anyone who looks further, the banks of the Thouet reappear with their steep rocks over the fertile fields.

Gourgé has a ninth-century church, an old Roman bridge over the River Thouet. Famous for its fete du medieval. There is 1 bakery, Salle des Fetes, Primary School, Marie, general store and garage.

It is a delightfully typical French village on one of  the famous Compostella  pilgrimage routes and makes a good starting point for a number of cycle and walking routes along the Thouet valley. Its inhabitants are called Gourgéens and Gourgéennes.

Gourge sits in Vallée du Thouet which contains some of the most tranquil and undiscovered corners of France.  The River Thouet itself lies approx 10 minute walk from the house and is a haven for both wildlife and fishermen. There is about 1/2 kilometre stretch of water with pontoons for the disabled, and day permits can purchased at the local shop.
